Why rankings deserve a regular check
Search positions move constantly. A core update, a competitor refreshing their article, or a title tag you edited last week can all shift a keyword by several spots. Searching manually now and then rarely tells you the real position, let alone when a drop started. A keyword rank checker records positions on a fixed schedule, so you can compare before and after every change you make.
It works for any domain, with no Google Search Console connection required. That makes it practical for a client site you just took over, a portfolio of niche sites, or a quick look at how a competitor performs on the same keyword set.
How to run a rank check
- Add the domain, for example brightsmiledental.com. Optionally set a target URL so only that page counts; other pages from the same site that happen to rank are then ignored.
- Paste your keywords, one per line: "emergency dentist chicago", "teeth whitening cost", "invisalign vs braces".
- Choose the country or location, language and device. Desktop and mobile results often differ by a few positions, so track the device your customers actually use.
- Pick a schedule: every day, every 7 days, every 10 days, every 30 days, or only once.
- Start the check. Results usually arrive within seconds to a few minutes.
What it costs in credits
Each check of one keyword uses 6 credits. When you add keywords, a 30-day period is paid up front based on the schedule:
- Daily: 180 credits per keyword
- Every 7 days: 30 credits
- Every 10 days: 18 credits
- Every 30 days or only once: 6 credits
If a check fails, its credits are refunded. Credits are shared across every tool in your account, and plans start at $2 per month. Compare them on the pricing page.
Reading your results
For every keyword you get the current position, the best position it has reached, and a history chart. The checker scans the top 30 results, roughly the first three pages. When the domain is not found there, the position shows as "> 30". That is not a penalty signal; it simply means the page is not yet strong enough to reach page three for that query.
Judge the chart by its trend over a few weeks rather than reacting to a single day. Movement of one to three spots is normal on competitive terms. If a keyword suddenly drops out of the top 30, confirm the page is still in Google's index with the Google index checker before rewriting anything.
Keep in mind that the positions you see in your own browser are influenced by search history, your signed-in Google account and your physical location, so they will rarely match a neutral check exactly.
Tips for smarter tracking
- Reserve daily checks for the money keywords you are actively optimizing. Long-tail terms that barely move are fine on a 10- or 30-day cycle.
- Use the "only once" option to capture a baseline before you pitch or start an SEO engagement.
- Group each website's keywords in a project in the dashboard so the keyword plan, tracked keywords and index checks live together.
- Before adding a term to tracking, look up its search volume so you spend credits on keywords worth the effort.
- Set a target URL for priority keywords to make sure you are measuring the page you want to rank, not a blog post or category page that drifts in and out.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my ranking different from what I see when I search Google myself?
Your own results are personalized by search history, your Google account, location and device. The checker queries Google for the exact country, language and device you select, without your browser profile, so the position is a more neutral measurement.
What does "> 30" mean?
The tool scans the first 30 Google results. "> 30" means the domain was not found within them for that keyword. It may rank on page four or beyond, or not rank at all yet.
Do I need to connect Google Search Console?
No. You can check rankings for any domain, including competitors, just by entering the domain and keywords.
Is the keyword rank checker free?
Signing up is free, but each check of one keyword costs 6 credits, so you need a paid plan with credits. The Lite plan is $2 per month for 1,000 credits. Failed checks are refunded.
How often should I check my rankings?
Track core keywords and pages you are actively optimizing daily. Stable long-tail keywords can be checked every 10 or 30 days. For a one-off snapshot, choose only once.
